Police this morning arrested Steven Katembeya, the campaign manager of one of the candidates in today's by-election for the Isingiro Woman Member of Parliament.
Katembeya has for the past two months managed the campaign of Stella Kafureka Kyahuhaire, the Forum for Democratic Change candidate in Isingiro.
Katembeya was detained for several hours for questioning on vote tampering. Thomas Kamugisha, the District Police Commander, says Katembeya and several other FDC members were interrogated on allegations that non-registered voters had infiltrated the area. He says the campaign manager has been release and the situation is being monitored.
Stella Kafureka is crying foul. She claims her opponents from the National Resistance Movement are using the police to intimidate her supporters and the polling officials.
Kafureka alleges that there is a ploy by the NRM to bribe her polling agents to look away as malpractices occurred.
The District Police Commander has appealed for calm, warning that he will arrest anyone attempting to disrupt today's elections.
The Isingiro Woman MP seat fell vacant in November when the sitting parliamentarian, Vicky Kyaka Kyokuhirwa was killed in a motor accident on Masaka road.
