Police Arrest Five in Ntungamo Protests

Police have arrested five people in involved in a series of protests in Ntungamo district challenging the fresh tally of votes from the Rushenyi County NRM party primaries.

Ntungamo District NRM registrar, Maria Mirembe, on September 6, declared Naome Kabasharira, the winner of the Rushenyi NRM party primaries with 24,006 votes, defeating the incumbent MP Mwesigwa  Rukutana who polled 23,966 votes. Other candidates in the race were Bob Karabayi who polled 2,266 votes, Nicholas Niwahereza with 1,202 and Norman Kashereka with 346 votes.

But Rukutana petitioned against the declaration and on this basis, Dr Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of NRM party electoral commission suspended the results and ordered for a recount. On September 15, Dr Odoi hinted that the recount had given Rukutana an edge over Kabasharira with a difference of 20 votes.

During the recounting of votes at the NRM offices on Kyadondo Road, Kampala on Tuesday, Dr Odoi said that there was contention on Nyakahita village, Rugarama Sub County which both parties raised queries on.

Kabasharira's Supporters have since protested Dr Odoi’s announcement and have been protesting since Wednesday in different towns disrupting the traffic along the Kabale, Ntungamo road. The supporters have used hard stones, burning tyres, and tree branches to block roads.

The protesters holding placards with writings demand the resignation of Ntungamo District Registrar, Maria Mirembe and are also pleading for fairness from Dr Tanga Odoi. Police have since deployed heavily, engaging in running battles with the supporters who keep changing areas for new protests every day.

Rwizi region Police spokesperson, Samson Kasasira, without disclosing the names for fear of jeopardizing investigations says that the arrested are going to help in the investigations.

Dr Odoi, who promised to get to the bottom of the query has since set a team to investigate the Nyakahita polling station. He is expected to announce the outcome of the investigations and the declare the winner of the elections today.
