Police on Friday engaged Forum for Democratic Change -FDC party supporters in running battles as the Kitgum Municipality MP Denis Onekalit Amere was slated to donate a n ambulance van to his constituents.

Trouble started after the police led by the acting Kitgum District Police Commander Martin Abigaba laid a roadblock at Alango Cell in Pandwong Division of Kitgum Municipality some 3 kilometers away from town to stop the legislator from mobilizing mass crowds.

At around 1 O'clock, the legislator’s  entourage consisting of his official vehicle registration number UAP 661P, the ambulance registration number UBJ 962Y and another truck registration number UBB 797C were all intercepted and blocked from accessing the central business district of Kitgum Municipality.

Martin Abigaba says they chose to intercept the legislator’s entourage acting on a tip off that he was planning to embark on dubious activities of mass gathering which was contrary to the current restriction imposed to curtail the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

According to Abigaba, Amere and FDC party supporters had reportedly mobilized members of the public to convene in large numbers to receive the ambulance and they had planned to hold a procession which are all contrary to the coronavirus restrictions.

Negotiations that lasted for close to three hours between the legislator, his supporters and the police failed to yield positive results as the police rejected Amere’s pleas to let him access his constituency while waving to his supporters.

Dozens of FDC supporters donning T-shirts in their party colors started converging at the venue while others lined up along the Kitgum - Gulu highway to express gratitude for their legislator for his impending plans of handing them their ambulance. Amere also rejected an appeal by the police asking him to be transported in another security vehicle to the office of the resident district commissioner but opted to foot as he was escorted by the police while waving to his supporters amidst restrictions that he doesn’t stop along the way.

All went on well until they reached the FDC party office where the MP was again directed not to access the party office and not to pass within the central business district of Kitgum Municipality and instead head towards the office of the RDC where he was designated to address only twenty people.

A scuffle then ensued which prompted the police to fire teargas to try to disperse the irate FDC supporters and in the confusion the legislator was swiftly whisked towards his home in Ayul Cell in Pager division of Kitgum Municipality.

By the time of publishing this story the MP's official vehicle was released but the ambulance has still remained intercepted at Alango Cell in Pandwong Division.
