Security authorities in Teso Sub region have blocked a belated celebration of International Women's Day organized by the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party.

The celebration was due to be held at Koloin Primary School, Kapir Sub County in Ngora district. It was expected that Dr Kiiza Besigye, a former presidential candidate would preside over the event and later hold rallies in selected districts within the region.

Besigye was also expected to visit the family of former Soroti Municipality MP Charles Willy Ekemu Atapar village, Kapir Sub County in Ngora district and the family of the late Toroma County MP Cryus Amodoi Imalingat in Katakwi district. The two former legislators passed on early this month.

However, East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Francis Tumwesigye says police was not informed about the planned celebrations. Tumwesigye says all the planned tours by FDC officials were never sanctioned.

East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Odongo says FDC had only asked for permission to train girls on how to make sanitary pads but not to hold rallies.

Ngora district FDC chairperson Sarah Eperu explains that the training on sanitary pads was a single activity to be conducted on the sidelines of the celebration. Similarly Ngora district chairperson Ben Eumu described police action as illegal and politically motivated.
