Police Clash with Protesters in Mbarara

Running battles between police and protesters emerged, and the Anti-Riot police commanded by Nicholas Ngonzi, the Mbarara District Police Commander, managed to send hundreds of protesters scattering into different directions.

Confrontations between the Police and protesters reached climax on Tuesday in Mbarara, as armored riot officers beat back demonstrators who had gathered outside Kakoba Market, located three miles from Mbarara town.

On the second day of phase two of the Walk to Work protests called by Action for Change activists, rogue protesters including commercial motor cyclists and members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), gathered at the market, but were intercepted just as they marched to town.

The DPC later accused the journalists of conniving with opposition leaders to stage demos and vowed to arrest journalists suspected of involvement in dubious activities.

In another development, police have released Iman Makumbi, the Western Region Vice President of the Democratic Party who was arrested on Monday for participating in the Walk to Work protests.

He was charged of inciting violence and released on Police bond.
