The body of police commissioner Okello Makmot has been handed over to the Uganda Police.

Makmot died last week while in transit aboard an Emirates plane while returning to Uganda from the United States.

The body arrived in the country aboard Fly Emirates Plane 777-300ER on Thursday afternoon.

It was escorted by Police Director Medical Services Dr Moses Byaruhanga and Makmot's son.

The casket containing Makmot's remains was wrapped with the Ugandan and police force flag.

The body was then transferred to Mulago hospital where pathologists led by police pathologist Dr Moses Byaruhanga will carry out a post-mortem.

"It is a requirement for that post-mortem to be done even though one was also done in Dubai," said Deputy Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.

On Friday, a funeral service will be held at All Saint Cathedral and later the body will be transported to his ancestral home in Oyam District where he will be buried on Saturday.

At the time of his death, Makmot had served the force for 30 years. He has been coordinator of National Focal Point (NFP) on small arms and light weapons department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs since 2016.
