Police in Mbarara have deployed heavily at the home of a Forum for Democratic Change Mbarara Municipality mayoral candidate.
Ponsiano Ntungyirehi quit the race on Tuesday and went into hiding. He tendered in his resignation to the district returning officer without citing any reasons.
His withdrawal leaves the incumbent and NRM flag bearer Wilson Tumwiine unopposed. Latest reports from Mbarara indicate that Tumiine's supporters have gone wild and took on the streets dancing and chanting victory songs.
District Police Commander Patrick Otika told Uganda Radio Network that police is guarding Ntungyirehi's home to prevent possible property destruction from FDC supporters in the area who accuse Ntungyirehi of being bribed by NRM to stand down They also want him to refund the money they contributed for his campaigns.
FDC officials in the district yesterday had reported Ntungyirehi as missing because the last time they had seen him was when he went to the Registrar's office.
The party's secretary Suliano Nampijja said that Ntungyirehi wanted the registrar to transfer all presiding officers who worked in the just concluded presidential and parliamentary election.
Police say they are still looking for Ntungyirehi.
