According to Emilian Kayima, Kampala Metropolitan Area police spokesperson, the side cars were purchased to boost the forces efforts in community policing through improving its response mechanisms.
Police has deployed at least 20 side cars in Kampala as part of efforts to increase patrols in the city.
The side car is a one-wheeled device attached to the side of a motorcycle, scooter or bicycle, producing a three-wheeled car.

The side cars have been deployed in different parts of Kampala and its outskirts, including six along the Northern bypass, Kabalagala, Muyenga, Jinja Road, Entebbe road, Kajjansi, Kawuku, and Nakawa.
Kayima says the side cars are also cheaper to maintain in comparison with the police patrol pick-ups, which consume more fuel and are also unable to reach some areas.

Mid this year, the Police was hit by fuel scarcity, due to failure to clear debts owed to oil companies.
Sources within the police say the side cars were imported from Italy.
Last year, Italy's Police chief,Gen Del Sette signed a Memorandum of Understanding with General Kale Kayihura on security collaborations including three specialised helicopters to assist in police operations.
