Police have dispersed traditional healers who had gathered to construct a shrine in Bujjagali village in Budondo ward in Jinja city citing breach of the Covid19 preventive guidelines.

Led by the new Bujjagali oracle, Hassan Kirunda, the traditional healers from different districts of Busoga Sub region converged on Wednesday to construct a shrine following the death of the 39th Bujjagali oracle “Nabamba Budhagali,” late last year.

The traditionalists sacrificed chicken, cows and goats as a way of appeasing the “gods” before kick starting the construction of the shrine for the new oracle.

However, the noise resulting from the drumming, singing and dancing that went on for the entire night, attracted more spiritualists and members of the public prompting police to halt their activities.

Kirunda said they labored to sensitize the traditionalists against converging at the shrine construction site but most of them failed to comply.

Mwiri Waiswa, a traditionalist said it is hard for them to implement the Covid19 preventive measures issued by the Health Ministry while performing rituals to construct a shrine for their oracle.

"We invited only high priests from different hills within Busoga sub region but most of them came along with their followers to help them sacrifice animals at the set altars. So it became hard for us to ensure physical distancing,” he said.

Dennis Kyatuhaire, the Officer in Charge of Budondo police station, who led his team to disperse the traditionalists, says they asked them to halt their activities until they receive guidance from Jinja District Health officials.
