Police in Kumi have ordered a halt to the eviction of Banyankole herdsmen from the wetlands in Soroti and Kumi districts.
The Soroti district police chief, Pius Mutabazi, says that the recent evictions were wrongfully carried out, by the Amuria county MP elect, Musa Ecweru.
Mutabazi said that Ecweru ordered the evictions for his own selfish interests and not for the good of the people in the two districts.
Ecweru is accused of assaulting a group of Banyankole herdsmen who had migrated to the Aukot swamp in Soroti. He is also reported to have given a two weeks ultimatum, to the herdsmen in Aukot swamp in Soroti district and Agu in Ngora Kumi.
Mutabazi however threatened to arrest Ecweru on sight if he implements the two weeks ultimatum. He said that Ecweru's ultimatum was illegal because he didn't consult the leadership in Soroti.
Ecweru however insists that he is acting legally. He says there is a clear law against the destruction of the wetlands and said the actions of the Banyankole herdsmen were illegal.
