Nakitanda added that the thugs cut her hand and aimed a heavy hammer at her head to force her to reveal where she kept the money collected on Saturday from her shop.
Police in Luwero town council are on the hunt for thugs who robbed 50 million Shillings and 80 phones from businesswoman Madinah Nakitanda, owner of Maama Husnah Phones Shop located near Stanbic Bank in Kasana, Luwero town. The shop deals in the sale of new phones, mobile money deposits, and agent banking services.

According to Nakitanda, four masked thugs armed with pangas, sticks, and a hammer broke into her home in Kakookolo zone around 2:00 am on Sunday. They threatened to kill her unless she surrendered the money. Nakitanda added that the thugs cut her hand and aimed a heavy hammer at her head to force her to reveal where she kept the money collected on Saturday from her shop.

Fearing for her life, Nakitanda surrendered the 50 million shillings she had kept at home after failing to deposit it in her account on Saturday because the banks had closed early. The thugs also stole 30 smartphones and 50 button phones, along with two agent banking tabs for Equity and Stanbic Banks.

Nakitanda explained that she had decided to keep both the money and phones at home for safety after thugs had broken into her shop three times earlier. "The thugs told me they monitored my movements from the shop upon learning that I didn’t deposit the money in the bank and moved it, including the phones, to my home. So they were sure I had the money," she said.

Sam Twineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, explained that Nakitanda was later rushed to Bishop Ceaser Hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries. A case of aggravated robbery was registered at Kasana Police Station. The police visited her home and recovered the breaking tools, but the suspects had fled unrecognized since they wore masks.

Twineamazima added that the police have commenced investigations and the hunt for the suspects to recover the stolen items and money. Break-ins and burglaries are rampant in Luwero. According to the Police Crime Report, at least 103 cases of burglaries were registered in 2023, ranking the district fifth in the country.
