Police in Teso sub-region is struggling to regulate gatherings at burials and marriage functions.

In March President Yoweri Museveni announced a ban on large public gatherings including funerals, weddings, church and services in a bid to help prevent the spread of the covid-19.

Museveni restricted burials to only family members while marriages especially religious weddings were limited to ten people.

However, security officers in the region are struggling to enforce the guidelines.

On Tuesday, the army had to reinforce the police at the burial of Serere Principal Assistant Secretary, Patrick David Ejiku in Kamuda Sub County, Soroti District. The police had cleared only 100 people but many mourners turned up forcing police to disperse them.

In Kumi, mourners overwhelmed police at the burial of former prisons officer, Frances Apio Outeke, on Thursday. According to Maxwell Ogwal, the Regional Police Commander for East Kyoga, there were three burials in different places within Kumi district that overstretched the police manpower.

Ogwal explains that some of the mourners turned rowdy at the officers enforcing physical distancing. He notes that much as police is trying to limit numbers of people attending burials and marriages, there is laxity from members of the community in adhering to the Presidential Guidelines on social distancing.

Christine Apolot, the Kumi LCV Chairperson says that police is overwhelmed by several burials that need their presence. She observes that many people have remained adamant to the guidelines issued by the President, asking police authorities to beef up security presence in the district.
