Police Probes Death of Inmate at Kanungu Prison

The deceased is identified as, Enos Maniriho 21, a resident of Kyabuyorwa upper in Butogota town council, Kanungu district. He is one of nine suspects arrested by police last year for conniving with nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo to kidnap people and demand ransom from their relatives.

Police in Kigezi region is investigating circumstances under which an inmate died at Kanungu Government Prison.

The deceased is identified as, Enos Maniriho 21, a resident of Kyabuyorwa upper in Butogota town council, Kanungu district. He is one of nine suspects arrested by police last year for conniving with nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo to kidnap people and demand ransom from their relatives.

They were charged by the grade two magistrates court and remanded to Kanungu Government Prison.

Maniriho developed stomach complications a month ago and was rushed to Kanungu Health Center IV where he died shortly after arrival.

However, Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi Region says his postmortem report indicated that he was poisoned. Maate says following the postmortem, police resolved to send some of the deceased body tissue to the government chemist for further analysis.

The body of the deceased is still at Kanungu Health Center IV. Ben Ochen, the in-charge of Kanungu Government Prison declined to comment on the matter.
