Kalifani Chemutai, the Officer in Charge of Apac Central Police Station, says they have opened investigations into the incident via police CRB 143/2016. According to Chemutai, both the MP and Opolo have recorded statements at Apac Central Police Station explaining the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Emmanuel Peace Opollo, the Lango Deputy Internal Security Officer is being investigated for firing gunshots during the presidential and parliamentary elections in Apac town on Thursday last week. Opollo is said to have shot in the air during a confrontation with Maxwel Akora, the Maruzi county Member of Parliament, near Apac primary school in Apac town.
Akora bumped into Opollo as he was returning home after casting his vote in Akokoro Sub County. Kalifani Chemutai, the Officer in Charge of Apac Central Police Station, says they have opened investigations into the incident via police CRB 143/2016. According to Chemutai, both the MP and Opolo have recorded statements at Apac Central Police Station explaining the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Chemutai says their investigations seek to establish what prompted Opollo to open the fire. Opollo admits firing two gunshots in the air to disperse Akora's supporters who he claims had blocked him. Police have also impounded a pickup vehicle registration number UAX 119M, which belongs to the legislator. The vehicle is parked at Apac Central Police station.
According to Chemutai, they are also holding more than 10 people in connection with various electoral offenses. They include Jimmy Awany, the Uganda People's Congress-UPC party chairperson for Ibuje Sub County, Rose Akullo Alori, the former Apac District NRM Secretary General and Molly Acomo among others.
