Police Officer Charged For Extorting UGX 100,000

The detective attached to Lugazi Police Station in Buikwe District alleged extorted a sum of 100,000 Shillings from a one Innocent Mwebaze, as an inducement not to register a case of obtaining money by false pretence which had been filed by one Violet Nakalyana.

Detective Sergeant of Police Alyanga Tom Embish has been charged with abuse of office and extortion.  

The detective attached to Lugazi Police Station in Buikwe District alleged extorted a sum of 100,000 Shillings from a one Innocent Mwebaze, as an inducement not to register a case of obtaining money by false pretence which had been filed by one Violet Nakalyana.

It is also alleged that Alyanga threatened to accuse the said Mwebaze of committing an offence of obtaining money by false pretence, a crime he committed between May 22 and May 23, 2019, before he was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. 

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released on a cash bail of 500,000 Shillings, upon presenting two sureties, among them, his landlord John Bidandi and his neighbour Richard Kihembo.

The Police officer was also asked to deposit his passport with the Court. His sureties have been directed to execute a non-cash bond of 20 million Shillings each and to deposit their land titles with the court.  

Grade One Magistrate Abert Asiimwe of the Anti Corruption Court adjourned the case to  August 29, 2019., when it returns for mention.

In March 2019, another detective, Godfrey Kalete was remanded to Luzira by the Anti-Corruption Court for obtaining a bribe of shillings 70,000.  Kalete who is attached to Usafi Police in Kampala had solicited the said money from Hanan Muhammad as an inducement to help him track his lost phone.
