The officer identified as Police Constable Gideon Mbirire attached to Kabulengwa police post in Nansana, Wakiso was arrested by a team of operatives on allegations of hiring out police guns to criminals
A police officer who was arrested by operatives of the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and detained at one of their safe houses has been found dead.
The officer, identified as Police Constable Gideon Mbirire attached to Kabulengwa police post in Nansana, Wakiso district, was arrested by a team of operatives on allegations of hiring out police guns to criminals.
However, on Thursday night after a day in custody, his body was dumped at Mulago City mortuary by a man, who was driving a government plated vehicle. The man only identified himself as Kaggwa, according to mortuary attendants.
In the mortuary reference book, Kaggwa claimed to have found the body, with no particulars, dumped somewhere in Kawanda. The body was later identified by a police officer at the mortuary, who knew the deceased in person.
A source who preferred anonymity told URN that the deceased's body has signs of beatings and there is high suspicion that he was tortured to death.
The Director General of the Internal Security Organisation-ISO could not be reached for a comment on the matter by press time.
However, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango declined to comment on the matter on ground that he had not been briefed with all the facts.
