Police on Spot for Shooting Man Dead in Koboko During Arrest of His Brother

According to information obtained by our reporter, Majid met his death around 5 am on Friday morning when a police officer from Abuku police station opened fire during an operation to arrest his brother, Tairi Ali, who they wanted for raping and defiling a teenager.

Police in Koboko are on the spot for shooting a dead 24-year-old Majid Ali, a resident of Igaba Village in Abuku Sub County while trying to arrest his sibling.       

According to information obtained by our reporter, Majid met his death around 5 am on Friday morning when a police officer from Abuku police station opened fire during an operation to arrest his brother, Tairi Ali, who they wanted for raping and defiling a teenager.  

Dr. Sazir Mayanja Nsubuga, Koboko Resident District Commissioner confirmed the incident but blamed residents for attacking police, which prompted them to open fire. Mayanja says that the shooting could not have occurred if residents allowed police officers to do their work.

Ashraf Mambo, the Koboko LC V Chairperson, says that the officers opened fire following a standoff with the Tairi’s relatives who tried to stop his arrest. He asked police to be mindful while working with Local leaders to avoid such bloody

incidences.

Swali Etima, the Abuku Sub County LC III Chairperson has also called upon the residents to allow police officers to perform their duties without any interfere. Despite this, he castigated the Police officers assigned to arrest the suspect for sidelining the relevant local authorities.

The deceased’s cousin, Siraji Isamil, who was present during the operation, said that upon hearing people wailing he rushed to check what was happening only to find Majid lying in a pool of blood after being shot in the head.

This is the second incident where police officers are shooting an innocent victim in their operations in West Nile region. 

Two weeks ago, operatives attached to the Flying Squad in Arua shot and shattered the legs of 16-year-old boy who was preparing for the afternoon prayers in Club Cell Oli Ward Arua Central Division as they attempted to arrest a suspected motorcycle thief and met resistance from his relatives.

  The teenager is hospitalized at Lacor Hospital in Gulu where he was referred to

from Arua Regional Referral hospital.
