Police in Mbarara have recovered three guns from thugs who had reportedly snatched them from security personnel while on night duty in Mbarara.

The assistant inspector general of Police Grace Turyagumanawe says one gun was recovered from Isingiro district at the Uganda-Tanzania border point as the thugs attempted to sneak it out of the country. The second gun was recovered from Bushenyi at Kampala International University western campus, where the thugs allegedly tried to use it to break into the university buildings.

Turyagumanawe said two other guns are still missing but added that with the good cooperation police has established with the public, they shall also be recovered any time.

He said one of the recovered guns belongs to a private security firm and it had been snatched from its guard in Boma area in Mbarara town as he was working at night.

The stolen guns had caused insecurity in the region that forced Turyagumanawe, who is also director of operations, to pitch camp in the region to ensure that the stolen weapons are recovered and thugs arrested.

People in the area had raised concern that police was not doing much to apprehend the culprits and suspected some elements within the force to be conniving and shielding criminals. Some of those suspected have since been suspended and subjected to investigations at the police standards unit in Kampala.

Those suspended include the former DPC Mbarara Nicholas Ngonzi.

The development has since seen police arrest more than 120 suspected criminals in the region of whom 42 are connected to robbery, 3 connected to murder and 24 to cattle thefts. These include the chairman LC 3 Rubindi sub county, Cornelius Kafureka, who is said to have been forging different stamps permitting the transportation of stolen animals to various destinations for sale.

Kafureka had existing files at police implicating him to cattle theft but could not be arrested for unknown reasons.
