Residents of Aduku Town Council, Kwania District have mounted a search for the body of a senior two student who drowned in a dam on Saturday.

The deceased Lino Odur, a senior two student of Maruzi Seed Secondary School in Apac district, drowned in Olami Dam on Saturday, where he and three of his colleagues had gone swimming.

Odur according to reports went to graze cattle but they decided to go swimming in Olami Dam, where he drowned. However, his friends managed to survive.

Isaac Ojuka, the General Secretary Olami A village, says that they had dispatched residents in the area to search for Odur’s body.
Kwania District Police Commander Edith Basalirwa says she had already dispersed a team of police officers to join residents and search for the body.

The incident comes barely two months after the same dam that was constructed by the government in 2010 claimed two lives.  In December 2020, a 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son drowned.

Residents accused the Aduku Town Council leaders of failing to fence off the dam.

But the LCIII Vice Chairperson of Aduku Town Council Peter Otim blamed the local leaders for failing to present the concern to the town council for action.

Otim says plans are underway to fence the dam and put in place security measures.
