Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, said they didnt prefer any charges against Besigye because he was only put under preventive arrest to stop him from committing crime.
Police didn't press any new charges against Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC presidential candidate following his arrest on Monday. Besigye was picked up by Police when he tried to lead a procession of his supporters through Jinja road minutes
after the Makindye magistrate's court dropped the charges of disobeying lawful orders from a police officer he was facing.
He was dragged to Jinja road police station, where he was held in custody until late evening. Shortly after his arrest, Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metrolpolitan Police spokesperson, said police would press charges of disobeying lawful orders against Besigye.
He also said they would formerly apply to high court
for the cancellation of Besigye's bail for resuming the defiance campaign. While releasing Besigye from Luzira Prison mid this month, Justice Wilson Masalu Musene cautioned him against indulging in the defiance campaign until his treason case is disposed of.
But this morning, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, said they didn't prefer any charges against Besigye because he was only put under preventive arrest to stop him from committing crime. He says the officers on ground decided to pick up Besigye after realizing that he would stir trouble with his supporters if allowed to continue with the procession.
