Police Shoot Dead Suspected Criminal in Kwania

Kwania Police shot dead a 22-year-old suspected criminal in an early morning incident on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Desmond Okao, was a resident of Albany Cell, Teduka Ward in Aduku Town Council, Kwania District. The shooting occurred at around 4:00 a.m.

According to reports, Okao and a group of about 30 individuals, who were returning from a disco at Brun’s Night Club, blocked the road and began waylaying pedestrians. Attempts by bystanders to disperse the group proved unsuccessful, leading to a police intervention.

Eyewitnesses claim that the youths had been fighting on the road for hours before police arrived. Officers reportedly fired six warning shots to disperse the group, but Okao was fatally shot in the process. Geoffrey Okello, the Internal Security Officer (GISO) of Aduku Town Council, confirmed the incident, stating that Okao was part of a gang that had been terrorizing the community.

Jimmy Uhuru, the Local Council I (LCI) chairperson of Aduku Township Cell, noted that the area has been experiencing rising cases of robbery, assault, and rape linked to youth gangs. He urged young people to be law-abiding and to avoid roaming at night.

Okao’s body was taken to Aduku Health Center IV Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Efforts to obtain a comment from Kwania District Police Commander Charles Mughisa were unsuccessful. Rashid Doka, the North Kyoga Regional Police Commander (RPC), stated that he had not yet been briefed on the matter.
