A police Officer accused of murder has been remanded to Kitgum Government Prison. Sperito Bainomugisha, the Aswa East Regional Police Training Officer, was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly killing 25-year-old Christopher Opoka in Kitgum Municipality.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on May 3, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m. in Apollo Ground Cell, Central Division, Kitgum Municipality. It is alleged that Bainomugisha shot and killed Opoka as he was returning from a nightclub. However, in his statement to the police, Bainomugisha claimed he acted in self-defense after being attacked by Opoka and others who are still at large.

During the court session, Kitgum Resident State Attorney Henry Kalinaki requested an adjournment to allow the police more time to complete investigations and submit the case file to the prosecution for review and further guidance.

"The police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder. The accused's claim of self-defense will be considered as part of the investigation. The prosecution will review the police file and provide further advice on the case," Kalinaki told the court.

Kitgum Grade One Magistrate Ponsiano Odwori granted the prosecution's request and remanded Bainomugisha to Kitgum Government Prison until June 6, 2025, when the case will be mentioned again. “The remand is intended to allow the police to complete their investigation and for the prosecution to review the case file,” Odwori explained.

He added that the accused will remain in custody until the next hearing, when the court will determine the next course of action based on the progress of the investigation and the available evidence.
