Poor State of Rwenkuba Bridge Irks Rukungiri Residents

The bridge that connects Kahoko parish to Kigaga parish leading collapsed six months ago after River Kashengu burst its banks.

Residents of Kahoko parish in Nyakagyeme sub- county Rukungiri District have raised concern about the dilapidated Rwenkuba Bridge.

The bridge that connects Kahoko parish to Kigaga parish collapsed six months ago after River Kashengu burst its banks.   The bridge also connects people to Mitooma Church of Uganda, Mitooma Primary School and Kahoko Catholic Church.

The residents say that the government has never fixed the bridge even after the district officials promised to construct a temporary bridge.

It serves over 7,000 people connecting to the villages of Rwenkuba, Kigaga,Kahoko Mirio, Nyakafunjo, Omububale and Kihehe.     

Kigungu Ismail, the LCI Chairperson Rwenkuba cell says they have contacted the district authorities several times for the bridge to be constructed in vain. He said that they are finding it difficult to transport their agricultural produce to the market.

Patrick Niwagaba, a resident of Rwenkuba cell said that she gets worried about the lives of the children who use the bridge to access schools.

Emma Akankwasa, a cyclist said the bridge was the only route that connects Nyakagyeme sub- County to Kanungu district. He said they are now facing a challenge of fuel because they use a longer route to transport passengers.

Gordon Ansinguza, a farmer said he wonders why the district and sub-county officials always collect revenue from the weekly market and fail to construct a temporary bridge.

Fred Turyamuhweza, the Rukungiri District Roads and Bridges Committee Chairperson says that the residents should remain calm. He adds that they have already written to the ministry of works requesting for funding to construct a permanent bridge.
