Residents of Kahoko parish in Nyakagyeme sub- county Rukungiri District
have raised concern about the dilapidated Rwenkuba Bridge.
The bridge that connects Kahoko parish to Kigaga parish collapsed
six months ago after River Kashengu burst its banks. The bridge also
connects people to Mitooma Church of Uganda, Mitooma Primary School and Kahoko
Catholic Church.
The residents say that the government has never fixed the bridge even after the
district officials promised to construct a temporary bridge.
It serves over 7,000 people connecting to the villages of Rwenkuba, Kigaga,Kahoko
Mirio, Nyakafunjo, Omububale and Kihehe.
Kigungu Ismail, the LCI Chairperson Rwenkuba cell says they have contacted the
district authorities several times for the bridge to be constructed in vain. He said
that they are finding it difficult to transport their agricultural produce to the market.

Emma Akankwasa, a cyclist said the bridge was the only route that connects
Nyakagyeme sub- County to Kanungu district. He said they are now facing a
challenge of fuel because they use a longer route to transport passengers.
Gordon Ansinguza, a farmer said he wonders why the district and sub-county
officials always collect revenue from the weekly market and fail to construct a
temporary bridge.
Fred Turyamuhweza, the Rukungiri District Roads and Bridges Committee
Chairperson says that the residents should remain calm. He adds that they have
already written to the ministry of works requesting for funding to construct
a permanent bridge.
