Professor Rugumayo Demands Apology from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa

Last month, while appearing before the land commission chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemereirwe to answer complaints of land grabbing, Kemigisa accused Rugumayo, Alex Ruhunda, the Member of Parliament Fort Portal Municipality and Prince Gilbert Mujogya of hating her and her late husband Omukama Davild Olimi Kaboyo.
Professor Edward Rugumayo, the Chairperson of the Tooro Elders Forum, has demanded an apology from the Queen Mother Best Kemigisa for making malicious statements against him.

Kemigisa also singled out Rugumayo for undermining development in Tooro and supporting Prince David Kijanagoma.

Before Kemigisa had been summoned by Bamugemereirwe, Prince Mujogya testified before the commission that Kemigisa grabbed, royal, kingdom land and sold off cultural sites such as burial grounds of their forefathers at Kagoma and Burongo in Kibitto and Kisomoro sub-counties respectively.

Mujogya said that they approached Kemigisa with all the facts to have the land transferred to the rightful owners but she refused.

In a press release dated May 3rd, Rugumayo says that the statements by Kemigisa are malicious and unfounded.

“I state categorically that I have never entertained or imagined hating Best Kemigisa nor have I ever imagined hating our late Omukama David Patrick Kaboyo, a noble person of generous and loving personality and a person I had high regard for, “stated Rugumayo.

Rugumayo explained that he had never hated Kaboyo because they were good friends and each took time to find out where they lived.

“The last time i met him (Kaboyo) was during was during 1983-84 in Nairobi, in exile, when he used to visit my home in Ngei Phase 2 estates. He took trouble to find where I lived and he shared a cup of tea with my family.

“So under what circumstances would he have had cause to tell Kemigisa what she alleges,” Rugumayo noted.

On undermining development in Tooro, Rugumayo said that he has initiated development in the region by virtue of his past and present positions as former minister, founder Mountains of the Moon University, Tooro Botanical Gardens and as chairperson of the Tooro Elders Forum. He also says that he has supported many youth through paying school fees from primary to university.

Rugumayo also denied allegations that he supported Kijanangoma to undermine the reign of King Oyo. “I know Kijanagoma, he has been to my home on several occasions, but I neither supported him nor visited Rwengoma Palace where he was operating. So these allegations are baseless,” noted Rugumayo.

Rugumayo wants Kemigisa to apologize and withdrawing the unfounded allegations against him.

“I have never quarreled or had cause to pick a quarrel with her. I respect her and she has every opportunity to redeem her name by withdrawing the malicious allegations. Short of this, I will resort to other channels for redress,” noted Rugumayo.
