Property worth millions of shillings perished in a motor vehicle fire accident at Kakira Village in Kakooge Sub County, Nakasongola District along Kampala Gulu high way on Wednesday evening.

The Gulu bound heavily loaded lorry registration number ZT 9538 caught fire at Kakira village in Katuugo parish after it developed a mechanical problem.

According to George Kateregga, an eye witness, says the fire is thought to have started from a mechanical problem due to heating of the engine and then spread.

Kateregga says the driver struggled to put out the fire unsuccessfully.

He adds that by the time police arrived, the vehicle was already burning and they could do nothing since they had not come with the fire brigade unit.

No person was injured in this accident but about five tonnes of property among others including office doors, ceiling boards, tins of paint and other others which were not identical because of fire perished. According to him property worth over 500 million shillings was lost in the fire.

Neither Luweero Police nor that of Nakasongola has a fire brigade.

Harriet Katamba, a resident of Katuugo trading centre in Nakasongola District, says they are worried as the lorry polluted a nearby stream before the fire was put out.

The Nakasongola District Police Commander, Dick Ayesigomwe confirmed the incident and cited lack of fire brigades in the district as a big challenge to fighting fire breakouts.

In April, fire gutted the Wamala Coffee Factory at Wabigalo in Mityana town, destroying coffee and property worth millions of shillings.
