Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye says the police disciplinary court has no jurisdiction to try serious crimes like torture and assault.
Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has described as a drama,
the ongoing trial of police officers who beat up his supporters recently.
Besigye says
the police disciplinary court does not have jurisdiction to try serious crimes such as torture, assault and gross misconduct subjected to his supporters in the suburbs of Kampala early this month.
Nine police officers were arraigned before the police disciplinary court and charged with misconduct. They include Osula Kato, Willy Kalyango, Bernard Muhangi, Moses Agaba, Robert Wamala and Dan Tandeka, a Crime Preventer.
Also charged were commanders SSP Andrew Kaggwa, the Kampala South Regional Police Commander, SSP Samuel Bamuzibire the FFU Commander, SP Moses Nanoka, DPC Wandegeya and ASP Patrick Muhumuza, the head of Katwe Field Force Police.
Besigye however says that the process is a fraud. He adds that he is in discussion with his lawyers to institute fresh charges of torture and assault against the individual police officers who were involved in the attack against his supporters.
