Confusion surrounding the NRM elections into Masindi went on long into the night yesterday with senior party leaders contradicting each other about the fate of the polls.
During a short program on Bunyoro Broadcasting Services, the NRM Masindi administrative secretary Businge Mubyama said all elections held yesterday were cancelled. He said any results tallied were also cancelled and instructed polling officers to hand over election materials to their sub-county headquarters.
Mubyama who was dressed in military fatigue for his radio appearance said his decision was final and unchangeable.
The news came as a shock to many NRM members who were locked up in a meeting for much of the evening to find a solution to the election problems.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the administrative secretary left Bunyoro Broadcasting Services. About 40 minutes later, Information and National Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Matsiko visited the radio station. Matsiko, who is the district NRM chairperson, contradicted everything Businge Mubyama said.
According to Matsiko, Mubyama had no authority to cancel the elections. She said he didn't consult the party and its stakeholders on the matter.
Matsiko said only elections for posts in Masindi Municipality were cancelled and would be held on Wednesday. She said constituencies elsewhere in the district where there were irregularities would vote today.
The program broadcast on Bunyoro Broadcasting Services was also aired on another Masindi-based station, Kings FM. Kings FM is owned by the Minister. The station's co-director, Harrison Magezi, is a contestant in the NRM elections for the position of Masindi Mayor.
Prior to yesterday's radio drama, the NRM was seen as a united party with little internal opposition. However it is clear from the election events that some cracks may be forming.
