A blood donation campaign conducted in Kalisizo town in Rakai District by Rakai Health Science program and Kitovu hospital has raised 150 units of blood.
The campaign conducted at Rakai health science program headquarters attracted a lot of people that turned up to donate blood.
According to the Project Manager Dr Fred Nalugoda the voluntary blood donation drive aimed at collecting at least 100 units of blood but they were overwhelmed by the number of people that turned up to donate blood.
He says that the one day blood donation drive was intended to refill blood bank supplies at the health centres in Kalisizo, Kyotera and Kakuuto among other health facilities in the district.
He explains that Rakai Health Science program always carry out a mass blood donation driven to mark end of year because the demand for blood tend to rise much in December because accidents are so common compared to other months.
Records indicate that the region needs more than 2,000 units of blood every month to distribute to health centres and hospitals in Masaka, Rakai, Sembabule, Kalangala and Lyantonde.
He added that other activities carried out to mark the end of year included tree planting along Namagoma Street in Kalisizo town, mass HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, safe male circumcision among other activities.
