Officials from Fisheries Ministry together with police have intercepted two trucks loaded with over 20 tons of immature fish each worth over 160 million shillings heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Fisheries official led by Kenneth Mbazira seized the fish tucks which was transporting dried fish and silver fish from Kasesero landing in Kyebe sub county In Rakai district on Monday evening. They had been hidden in the bush by a fish trader after getting information about the operation.

Mbazira explains that the impounded trucks are UAJ 461Z and UAN 360K and they were found hidden in a bush at Kyebe hill and another near Katonga River.

Mbazira however, had a bitter exchange of words with Francis Njogerere, the vice Chairperson of Kasesero landing site Beach Management Unit. He accused Njogerere and his team of failing Fisheries Ministry efforts to fight illegal fishing because of corruption.

Njogerere, however, dismissed the allegations saying that some fish traders connive with fishermen to smuggle immature fish out of the landing site to bushes where fish is loaded onto trucks normally parked in the hideouts.

Rakai District Criminal Investigations officer Rose Nabakoza says that the impounded fish trucks have been towed to Kalisizo Police station while the hunt for the owner of the impounded trucks goes on.
