Kiwanuka, the Rakai District Workers representative has been arrested for alleged
bribery and extortion.
He was picked up by police on Tuesday evening for
allegedly soliciting a bribe of Shillings 1.7 million from Desire
Birinomutonzi, a resident of Kifamba Sub County with promises of helping him
secure a job in the district’s Information Technology Department.
In his statement,
Birinomutonzi claims that Kiwanuka approached him in March this year after
submitting his application for a job in the ICT department. The suspect
reportedly asked him to pay a bribe if he wished to get the job.
“By April, he had received the amount he wanted from me and he said there was
even no need of advertising the job because he had a great influence among the
officials at the district headquarters and the District Service
Commission," he noted.
According to Birinomutonzi,
he waited for his appointment in vain prompted to start chasing Kiwanuka who
had tossed him several times. He decided to report the matter to
Authorities including
police for seek redress.
"My
suspicion rose when Mr. Kiwanuka started rejecting my calls in early August. I
decided to report to Police so that I'm at least paid back my little
money", he noted.
Birinomutonzi claims
that Kiwanuka conned several other job applicants in a similar manner and
promised to collaborate with police to produce evidence against the suspect.
Benson Nuwamanya, the
Rakai District Police Commander confirms the arrest, saying they have also
opened a general inquiry on the bribery allegation leveled against Kiwanuka,
adding that he will appear in court once polices investigations are
complete.
Robert Benon Mugabi, the Rakai District chairperson condemned the alleged
conduct of the councilor, saying they will also conduct internal investigations
over the same.
