The Buvuma Deputy Resident Commissioner, Juma Kigongo has suspended suspicious cultural rituals at Lufu Island, saying they are fueling insecurity in the area.

Lufu is among the scattered islands in Buvuma district and is home to over 2000 residents spread in the two villages of Lufu and Mukuloomu.

The residents of the Islands petitioned the RDC’s office accusing witchdoctors under their leader Ismael Kalyowa alias ‘Jjajja Lufu’ of masquerading as spirits to fuel insecurity in the community by stoning their homes and raping single mothers during night hours.

According to Kigongo, such practices have been common on various islands in Buvuma but they have managed to stop them by suspending suspicious cultural rituals.

He explains that although his office isn’t against culture practices of certain ethnic groups, they cannot seat back and let them disorganize the peace of others.

She notes their children get beaten by the witchdoctors leaving them with physical and psychological pain.

Richard Balwa, the Lufu LCI Chairperson says he has registered about ten cases of rape.

He says the witchdoctors have been warned residents that they will continue suffering calamities unless they pay them to perform cultural rituals in their homes to chase away the evil spirits.

However, Ismael Kalyowa, the leader of the group, says they are being framed by residents opposed to their stay on the island.

According to Kalyowa, he is a registered practitioner who can’t involve himself in criminal practices.
