Suspicious activities by a group of unidentified people in Yumbe district, is causing panic among some residents.

The suspicious people have been sighted in Romogi sub-county along the Uganda-Sudan Border. The people are scared that these could be rebels trying to regroup and terrorize the district.

The rebels scare comes shortly after unknown gunmen opened fire on two UPDF soldiers guarding the disused Koboko airfield last week.

One soldier was killed, while another one was seriously injured. The gunmen escaped with two guns.

The Yumbe Resident District Commissioner, Drani Dradriga, says the District Security Committee, is investigating to ascertain the authenticity of the rebel scare.

The West Nile army spokesman, Lt Paul Wamboga, however rules out the possibility that the people sighted in Romogi are rebels. He says that the group could be comprised of armed thugs whose motive is to rob people of their property.

Sources say the district has recently been hit by a string of robberies, involving an organized group of armed people.

Yumbe District was the center of the 1990s war between the government forces and the rebel Uganda National Rescue Front II of Ali Bamuze. The war ended following a peace deal signed in December 2002.

But there is growing dissatisfaction among some ex-combatants who feel they have not been helped enough to resettle and reintegrate in the communities.
