Dott Services and Stirling Civil Engineering have been contracted by the Uganda National Roads Authority to redesign the Kampala-Jinja highway in preparation for its transformation into a dual carriageway road.

Dan Alinange, spokesperson of the Uganda National Roads Authority, says the dual carriageway will ease traffic on the busy highway and reduce the number of accidents along the 80-kilometer road.

Stirling Civil Engineering is contracted to redesign 59 kilometers of road. Dott Services will manage the reconstruction of 21 kilometers from Kampala to Mukono.

Alinange says Dott Services has already started its work by widening sections of the road from Nakawa to Mukono. He says the two companies will present their proposed designs by the end of this year.

The proposal will contain estimates for the road reconstruction, compensation for people who will lose land to the road and other physical considerations.

Alinange says the entire project will cost 250 million dollars. Work is expected to begin in earnest in November next year.

The Kampala-Jinja highway is one of the busiest roads into the capital city. Despite this, it is narrow and poorly built, with numerous black spots along the way. The poor state of the road means it is also the scene of a high number of traffic accidents every year.

Simon Kaita, the Jinja Tourism Officer, says he is excited by the news of the road reconstruction. He says it will boost Jinja's position as a popular tourism destination because visitors to the town will be more confident to travel along the route.
