Recruitment of Prison Warders Still Low

Audio 1

The Uganda Prisons Service needs 6,500 additional warders in order to optimally conduct its duties.

Frank Baine, spokesperson of the prisons service, says the recruitment and deployment of 693 will help in the management of prisons around Uganda, but is not enough to meet the current need. Currently there is one prison warder for every 5 inmates. The standard international ratio is one warder for three prisoners.

The 693 new warders are part of a force of 2,154 local government administration staff whose duties were disbanded last year. About 830 former local government prison warders were not considered for national service because they lacked qualifications for the job.

Baine says the recruitment to boost the prison service numbers is ongoing.
