Reduced Road Fund Hindering Maintenance Works in Kabale Municipality

The reduction of the road fund is hindering road maintenance in Kabale Municipality, according to the local leaders. 

Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha, the Mayor of Kabale Municipality explains that by the time he was voted into power in 2016, Kabale Municipality was receiving Shillings 1billion from the road fund.  

 

Byamugisha however, says that funding started declining without clear reasons. He says that this financial year, Kabale Municipality only received Shillings 600million, which cannot adequately cater for the road maintenance works. 

He says that the municipality has a road network of 113 kilometers with eleven percent tarmac. He says that the funding gap is creating many challenges when it comes to road maintenance since do not have other sources of income.

Byamugisha says the slashing of the road fund stalled the construction of the multi-million Kiruruma Bridge along Karitusi road that connects Kigongi ward in Central Division and Rushaki ward in the southern division.         

He calls for the government intervention, saying that the persisting challenge is hampering road infrastructure improvement Kabale Municipality that is warming up for City status in 2023.

Sam Arineitwe, the Central Division LC 3 Chairperson, says that the funding gap is greatly affecting the Central division because they have not rehabilitated most of its roads for a very long time.
