The Regional Police Commander for Greater Bushenyi was among those
injured when a blast went off in a bus on Monday evening in Lungala, Mpigi
News of the explosion that left two people dead and scores injured in a bus belonging to Swift Safaris Bus Company started
circulating at about 6 pm.
Eyewitnesses said that the incident happened at around 5.20 pm in a bus registration number UAU 989T. The bus that had 37 passengers on board was travelling from Kampala to Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.
Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic Police Spokesperson said that among the injured
is Adrian Kwetegyereza , the Acting Regional Police Commander for Greater
Bushenyi who sustained severe injuries in the legs. Kwetegyereza was rushed to Mpigi Hospital and later transferred to
Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The Police Bomb Squad arrived at the scene at Lungala, on the Kampala-Masaka
highway in Mpigi Town Council, to ascertain whether it was a bomb or another
Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga said that a team of bomb experts has been
dispatched after the deadly explosion.
“The scene has been cordoned off pending a thorough
assessment and investigation by the bomb experts. We shall periodically give
updates surrounding the incident,” Enanga said in a statement.
He said that the dead and several other victims including injured persons had
been evacuated from the scene.
The police's bomb squad arrived at the scene to establish whether
there was another explosive inside the bus.
Passengers alleged that the explosion could have taken place from
the boot where luggage is transported.
The explosion comes two days after a bomb attack in Komamboga at
a small eatery Georon next to the famous Digida Pork joint in Komamboga. The
explosion left one person dead and three injured.
