Relatives of four suspected armed robbers have expressed concern over their delayed trial.

The suspects, who were armed with a pistol, were arrested last month standing outside a mini supermarket in Jinja town. The suspects are Stanley Gambwa, Brian Ssempijja, Swaibu Kalijonjo and Fred Mayinja.

The suspects who have been in detention for the last three weeks were allegedly using the pistol to rob shops within Jinja town.

Abby Mwase, a brother to Kalijonjo says that the suspects have been in detention for the last three weeks without trial.

"My brother and his other three colleagues were arrested on 8th, September, and have been detained ever since without a formal trial," Mwase told URN.

A source privy to the investigations told URN on condition of anonymity that, the file of the suspects was first sent to the Director of Public Prosecution- DPP. However, the source says that the DPP recommended that the charges of two of the suspects be dropped.

“The four suspected robbers were charged on a joint file, however, on referring it to the state attorney for legal advice, he made recommendations for the acquittal of two suspects, a decision that was quashed by the investigating officers who sought court martial intervention hence the delays in prosecution,” The officer said.

The Jinja CPS Division Commander, Vincent Irama says that the four suspected armed robbers who were arrested last month will be arraigned in the military court-martial for trial.

Irama adds that the suspects will face trial on a date that will be communicated to their relatives.
