Relatives of Lira Businessman Threatens to Sue Government Over his Death

The family of a businessman in Lira town who fell off a speeding police vehicle and died of severe injuries is threatening to sue government for compensation. Geoffrey Mone, a resident of Teso Bar in Adyel division died last week at Lira Regional Referral Hospital as a result of internal injuries and brain damage.
The family of a businessman in Lira town who fell off a speeding police vehicle and died of severe injuries is threatening to sue government for compensation. Geoffrey Mone, a resident of Teso Bar in Adyel division died last week at Lira Regional Referral Hospital as a result of internal injuries and brain damage.

 

 

Mone was allegedly picked up by police last week from Akibua stadium for being idle and disorderly. Henry Alyanga, Central North Police spokesman says the deceased jumped off a police car while being taken to Lira Central Police Station and landed with his head. Alyanga says that Mone was rushed to Lira Hospital where he died the next day.

 

 

His brother Tom Bosco Okello says that they engaging police to compensate them for the death of Mone. Okello says that they suspect that his brother could have been tortured by police leading to his death. He has threatened to sue government to compensate them shillings 100 million for the death of Mone unless they strike a compromise with them.

 

 

Godwin Tumugumye, Lira District Criminal Investigations Officer says that they have opened a general Enquiry File into the circumstances leading to the death of Mone. He says that once it is established that the cops who arrested Mone had anything to do with his death they will be prosecuted in courts of law.
