Repair of Railway Line Excites Gulu Residents

The rehabilitation of the Tororo-Gulu-Pakwach railway line has excited  residents of Gulu town. Major works on the Tororo-Pakwach railway line is in progress ahead of the resumption of train services scheduled for May this year. Currently engineers from Rift Valley Railways-RVR are fixing the 500 kilometer line that has not been in use for more than two decades.

Isaac Otim, an official from Kato Constructors which was contracted by RVR to carryout repairs on the line says they have finished work on the Mbale-Tororo axis and services have resumed along that section. Otim explains that they are currently carrying out repair in Gulu which include clearing the railway line by removing anthills, replacing missing slippers and demolishing houses that have been built within a radius of 30 meters from the line. He says the biggest obstacle to their work is in Gulu town where local authorities have created roads that pass over the railway line.

But in Gulu residents are anxious to see the train after more than two decades. Charles Osborne, a security guard from Lacor says the resumption of train services will help reduce on the cost of transport in the region. He also says railway transport will help reduce on the rampant road accidents. Margaret Acha, a business lady at Ring Road is hopeful that the resumption of train services will boost her produce business as people from other areas will be traveling to Gulu.

Rift Valley Railways is undertaking 5.4 billion shillings nine months repair works on the Tororo-Pakwach Railway line.
