Residents Demand Reopening of Maruzi Ranch Boundaries

Maruzi land measuring approximately 64 square kilometres has been home to more than 1,500 squatters since 1995. In 2019, the government leased 54 square miles of the Ranch land for 50 years to Hill Side Agricultural Investment limited for the establishment of Palm Oil production. However, some residents surrounding the project site are accusing the investor of encroaching into their land.

Residents of Acamcabu village in Ayeolyec parish Akokoro sub-county in Apac district are demanding for the reopening of the boundary of Maruzi Ranch.

Maruzi land measuring approximately 64 square kilometres has been home to more than 1,500 squatters since 1995. In 2019, the government leased 54 square miles of the Ranch land for 50 years to Hill Side Agricultural Investment limited for the establishment of Palm Oil production.

However, some residents surrounding the project site are accusing the investor of encroaching into their land.

About 400 locals of Acamcabu village occupying a land adjusten to Maruzi Ranch land, are accusing the proprietor of Hill Side Agricultural Investment Limited of encroaching into a land, which they claim to be the rightful owners.

Richard Odongo, the LCI chairperson of Acamcabu Village accused the Apac district leaders of not listening to their calls to reopen the boundary of Maruzi Ranch.

Walter Omara and Amos Odur, both residents of Acamcabu village alleged that the palm oil investor has encroached deep into their land, and they are being blocked from using their land.

They claim that they have been blocked from engaging in any productive activities and facing lack of food, seeking immediate intervention of the government in to the matter.

Chuck Deome, the Manager Hillside Agricultural Limited refuted the allegation of encroaching into the land in question. The Apac Resident District Commissioner Emma Ngabirano says he has also not yet received any formal complaint from these people over the issue of the contested land.
