Anonymous letters Cause Panic in Mbarara

The leaflets, first seen over the weekend, indicate that the authors will attack and kill the entire family of the area Local Council LC I Chairperson Emmanuel Ssempiira before descending on other residents. The same leaflets were distributed in some areas of Kakiika division.

Residents of Kachenche village in Kakooba division, Mbarara Municipality are living in fear after unknown people dropped several leaflets warning of an eminent attack.

The leaflets, first seen over the weekend, indicate that the authors will attack and kill the entire family of the area Local Council –LC I Chairperson Emmanuel Ssempiira before descending on other residents. The same leaflets were distributed in some areas of Kakiika division.

Ssempiira says that the leaflets which have triggered panic in his household and across the village.

Medard Katusiime, one of the area residents says that his children have been unsettled since the leaflets were distributed adding that locals now go to bed as early as 7p.m. for fear of being attacked.

Kakiika division LC III chairperson Gumisiriza Kabwisho, who also heads the division's security committee, says that they have embarked on the sensitizing locals on measures needed to avert a possible attack by criminals.

Mbarara District Police Commander Jaffar Magyezi advised residents to put up security lights on their houses as one way of improving safety. Magyezi says that the police have intensified its operations as well as the search for authors of the anonymous letters.

So far one person has been arrested in and three others are on the police watch list connection with the leaflets. He however declined to divulge details about their identities.

Mbarara Resident District Commissioner Captain Martha Asiimwe has visited the area and warned the public about harboring criminals in their homes and rentals. Asiimwe adds that the local leaders have already been instructed to have a list of residents in the area and recording every new resident in the area to ensure that the criminals do not take advantage of the gaps.

Similar letter were early this year dropped in the areas of Masaka, Kampala, Entebbe and Wakiso.
