Residents of Sumbwe village in Mpungwe Sub County, Mukono district have demonstrated against the delayed compensation by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation-NWSC.

Last year, NWSC signed a contract with Sogea Satom International for the construction a new drinking water treatment plant in Katosi in Mukono district. The plant which is expected to supply 160 million litres of water per day will also have a 60,000 litres capacity water reservoir at Nsumba hill in Mukono district, 55km bulk heavy duty transmission mains, another 15,000 litres capacity water reservoir at Sonde hill and booster station in Namugongo.

It is expected to improve water supply and sanitation services to more than four million residents in Kampala metropolitan area, under a master plan called Kampala Water-Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project.

On Wednesday, more than 200 residents who were affected by the construction of the plant staged a demonstration.  Some of the residents note that they have waited for more than three years for compensation.

Fred Mawanda, one of the affected residents said that after their property was valued, they were told to open bank accounts. Mawanda says that they have waited for the money in vain.

Samuel Apedel, the NWSC Spokesperson says that residents will not be compensated for the land but only for temporally structures that were demolished.

According to Apedel, the land was given to NWSC by the National Forest Authority-NFA.
