Residents Protest Late Compensation on Rukungiri-Kanungu Road Project

A number of residents across the 78-kilometre stretch argue that they are yet to receive their compensation despite ongoing works by China Henan International Corporation-CHICO. They equally accuse the company of encroaching on additional land that was not evaluated for compensation by the Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA.

Persons affected by the Rukungiri-Ishasha-Kihihi-Kanungu road project are protesting the delayed compensation for their properties. The 208 billion Shillings project running through Kanungu and Rukungiri districts, is funded by the government of Uganda and the African Development Bank (ADB).

However, a number of residents across the 78-kilometre stretch, argue that they are yet to receive their compensation despite ongoing works by China Henan International Corporation-CHICO.  They equally accuse the company of encroaching on additional land that was not evaluated for compensation by the Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA.

Elias Mugambage, a resident of Nyakashure in Nyamirama Sub County, Kanungu District accuses UNRA and CHICO officials of demolishing his house before compensating him.

Issa Birungi, a resident of Kihihi Sub County accuses UNRA and CHICO of conniving to take up 30 instead of the 25 meters of land demarcated for the road and its reserve and for which compensation was evaluated.

Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafique Ssekandi blames UNRA for failing to sensitize landowners about the changes on the road designs which required them to expand up to 30 meters from 25 meters in some areas. He, however, says that they are in talks with UNRA to make sure that all affected locals are compensated fully.
