Residents Stranded as Hailstorm Destroys Houses, Gardens in Kigarale Sub County

Residents of Kigarale Sub County in Kyenjojo district are counting losses following a heavy storm that destroyed their houses and crops on Wednesday.

  The storm uprooted bananas and destroyed countless gardens of cassava, maize and cabbages. It also killed five goats and blew the roof tops of 11 houses.

  The most affected villages are Ruhuuna, Ndama, Mirambi-Mukashasha, Kahara and Bujumwa. Only Kigarale Sub County was affected by the storm in the entire district.

Kaija Alinaitwe, one of the affected residents from Kahara village in Kabale parish, says his one acre of cassava garden, bananas plantation and house are no more.  

  According to Alinaitwe, he is currently staying with his neighbor together with his three children as he ponders his next move.

  He says the storm also destroyed his garden of beans and maize leaving his family without food.  

Ismail Kalinte, the Kigarale Sub County LC V councilor, says the stormed also razed his house, killed his three goats and destroyed his two acres of coffee.

Our reporter visited the affected area and saw gardens affected by soil erosion and are now characterized by bare ground and galleys. Kalinte says that over 800 people have been affected by the storm and are now seeking help.

A similar storm hit Fort Portal municipality and blew off the roof top of Stanbic bank branch and led to the collapse of a billboard in Kisenyi along Fort Portal - Bundibugyo road.  

No deaths or injuries were reported from both incidents
