Police in Kibaale are hunting for thugs who broke into the Kisiita Katweyombeke SACCO on Thursday night and stole eight million shillings.
The burglary at the SACCO offices in Kisiita trading center, Kisiita Sub County, in Kibaale district, occurred shortly after midnight.
Zurah Ganyana, the midwestern regional police publicist, says the thugs used a handsaw to break the padlock and gained entry into the offices. They rampaged through the drawers where the money was kept and then fled.
Francis Habasa, who was supposed to be guarding the office that night, has gone missing. Police suspects the robbers kidnapped him.
Meanwhile, the thugs attempted to break into Bugangaizi United farmers SACCO offices, but were unsuccessful because the padlocks failed to open. Tony Obeyi, a guard at the office was disarmed and his gun taken.
Obeyi was recovered this morning lying unconscious near the Sacco offices. Ganyana suspects the robbers drugged him.
Ganyana says no one has been arrested in connection with the burglary. He however says that preliminary reports show the SACCO workers aggrieved over pay could have planned the theft.
