Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, the acting Mbarara City Mayor has been declared the winner of the NRM party Primaries held on Friday.

Mugabe beat his closest rival Herbert Kamugisha polling 36,116 against 9,303 votes, a margin of 26,813 votes. The third contender, Justus Karuhanga Tugume got 1,079 votes after the final tally.

The win gives Mugabe an opportunity to compete in the 2021 general elections to fight for the seat as the first Mayor of the newly created Mbarara city which started its operations this financial year. He, however, has to compete with Stanely Katembeya, from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change.

Mbarara city NRM party Registrar Kaweesi Sebyuma asked the candidates to avoid conspiracies but work together to form a formidable force to counter the opposition in 2021 general elections.

“We are ready to receive all petitions, if you are not contented with the results but don’t fight each other we need to work as a force to defeat the opposition next year,” He said. Meanwhile, Didas Tabaro got 42,004 to defeat Hygin Karuragire with 23,217 votes for the Mbarara District Chairman's flag.

The Mbarara presiding officer, Yorokamu Kacumita, asked NRM candidates that lost to avoid contesting as independent candidates.
