Uganda Rugby Cranes captain Asuman Mugerwa has said they are ready to defeat arch-rivals Kenya Simbas in the first leg of the regional Elgon Cup on Saturday.

“ This is just not an ordinary match because it marks the beginning of a long season. We need to start on a good note with a win,” Mugerwa told URN on Friday.

Head coach John Duncan from South Africa also said it is time Uganda broke this Elgon Cup jinx. “We need to stop this habit of Kenya always beating us in the Elgon Cup. The players have been working hard and are ready to prove a point,” added Duncan.

The coach said he is confident because his team is blended with good experienced players and up-coming youth players. “We need to make sure we take advantage of the home ground and get a comfortable win before the return leg in Nairobi in July,” added Duncan.

New Zealander Ian Snook will also be leading Kenya for the first time in an international match since taking over the job in March this year.

The Kenya Simbas' team expected to arrive this afternoon on a Kenya Airways flight will be captained Davies Chenge.  Last year Kenya won Elgon Cup with an aggregate score of 56-51. The Simbas won the first leg 23-18 in Kampala, while the return leg ended 33-33 in Nairobi.
