The Uganda Rugby Cranes will play their opening match against Ghana in the 2018 World Cup 7s qualifier at the Legends Club, Lugogo on Friday morning.

According to the draws coach Tolbert Onyango's team will be up against Zambia in the second game later in the afternoon before battling the tricky Morocco and Tunisia teams later in the group games.

Besides being the 2017 Africa 7s Championship, the two day competition is also a 7s World Cup and 2018 Commonwealth Games qualifier. The first two teams will directly qualify to the 7s Rugby World Cup 2018 as well as for the World Series qualifier tournament in Hong Kong in 2018. The first two teams belonging to Commonwealth countries will also qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Onyango told URN that although Uganda is hosting the event, he expects a very tough competition from the likes of Zimbabwe, Tunisia and Morocco. “We need to treat every game very seriously because it will not be easy,” he added.

Skipper Eric Kasita said they will make sure they open with a big win against Ghana on Friday morning. “ Starting with a good win will give us good momentum as the event progresses,” he added.

Andrew Owor, the Uganda Rugby Union (URN) President said it is with great honour and excitement that Uganda hosts a big event like this. “ I welcome the world to the Pearl of Africa and a celebration of African Rugby,” he added.

Tunisia will battle Ghana in the opening match of the day before Zambia take on Morocco in the second game. Hosts Uganda have been placed in group A that has Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia and Zambia, while Group B has Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Senegal and Madagascar.
