More than 150 civil servants in Rukiga district are protesting nonpayment of their salaries. The affected civil servants, mostly teachers, say they haven't received their pay for the last six months.
Rukiga district was curved out of Kabale on July 1, 2017. Medard Asimire, a teacher at Nozi primary school in Rwamucucu Sub County, says the failure to pay them has made their lives very difficult. According to Asimire, he has been unable to pay tuition for his two secondary school children.
Zadock Tumuhimbise, the national chairperson, Uganda National Teacher's Union, says it is unfortunate that the civil servants especially teachers have worked for six months without salaries.
Tumuhimbise, who heads Nyeikunama primary school in Muhanga Town council in Rukiga district, says unless the matter is handled, it may affect pupil's performance in primary leaving examinations.
Hanny Turyahebwa, the Rukiga Chief Administrative Officer, admits the problem, saying the matter will be handled before the end of this financial year.
