Emmanuel Mutambuuka Turyasingura, the National Unity Platform (NUP) party Coordinator in charge of Rukiga District is in custody at Kabale Central police station on charges of possession of military stores.

He was picked up on Thursday afternoon from his home in Muhanga town council and locked up at Muhanga police station. This is the second time Turyasingura is being arrested following an earlier raid on his home in March early this year.

During the raid, police searched Turyasingura’s house where they recovered the campaign posters of the NUP president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine and party cards among other things. He was later released on police bond.

Now, Police say that they decided to Turyasingura because the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has sanctioned his file. He was dragged to Kabale Magistrate’s Court on Friday afternoon where he was held until the evening.

Derrick Katebire Mugyesera, the Kigezi NUP Party Secretary-General, says that despite being ready to stand surety for his colleague, he was held in the court cells until 5:30 pm.

He says police officers blocked anyone from accessing Turyasingura and later transferred him to Kabale central police station in Kabale municipality.

According to Kateebire, he was told that Turyasingura will return to court on Monday next week because there was no magistrate to handle his matter.

One of the officials at Kabale court told our reporter on the condition of anonymity that Turyasingura could not be remanded to Ndorwa government prison because Isaac Rukundo, the Grade one magistrate and Julius Chaka Borore, Kabale Chief Magistrate were away in the field.

The duo had gone to preside over the swearing-in of political leaders Buhara and Butanda in Kabale district as well as Northern and Southern Division of Kabale

Municipality.
